Walking around the edge of a field after the first harvest of hemp they had grown for natural fibre, they spotted a plant which was left standing by mistake. The seed tasted delicious with a flavour similar to hazelnuts. They then became hooked on a journey that led to a small revolution in food in 2005 when they launched their first bottles of Good Oil in Harvey Nichols, Selfridges, high end delis and then Waitrose.

East Yorkshire Hemp was founded in 2002 and have spent the last five years making considerable investment of both time and money into building and adapting machines to separate the woody core or shiv from the fibre. They now grow 400 acres which is processed on the farm and sell HemShiv for animal bedding and also into the building sector. They also sell fibre to textile manufacturers for further processing into roof insulation batts or non-woven matting for use by mattress manufacturers.
